French workers stage nationwide strike

A day of nationwide protests against labor reforms has begun in France. The protests are coupled with a rail strike over a wage dispute, which has disrupted transportation. Student groups have joined labor unions in the nationwide protests. The government has faced massive blowback to measures that would give employers more flexibility in hiring and firing employees. An online petition against the draft law has attracted more than a million signatures while a poll showed seven in ten people were opposed to the proposed changes. The government and business leaders argue the reforms will encourage companies to take on more workers on permanent contracts rather than temporary ones. However, unions regard the draft law as a threat to job security.
