'We’re seeing a replay of the US-backed 1964 coup in Brazil': Analyst
Journalist, author, and activist, Fra Hughes sees Brazil’s current political crisis as history echoing itself, a near-reenactment of the turmoil that culminated in the 1964 military coup.
In the early 1960s, he argues, the CIA and US State Department worked behind the scenes to destabilize the Brazilian government, backing opposition parties, fomenting street violence, and wielding sanctions and diplomatic pressure.
Today, Hughes contends, the script is similar, but the staging is no longer covert: Foreign political and economic actors are intervening in Brazil’s electoral process with a conspicuousness that makes the past feel dangerously present.
The commentator further points to the political legacy surrounding Jair Bolsonaro, noting that Bolsonaro is serving an 87-year sentence in connection with an alleged military coup, and presents this as another indication of history repeating itself.
He notes that the United States, including Donald Trump and Marco Rubio, along with corporations and the US military, are interfering in Brazil’s elections through a combination of economic and political pressure.
According to his account, these measures include imposing 25% tariffs on Brazilian imports, sanctions and what he characterizes as economic warfare, as well as propaganda, financial influence, political maneuvering, and support for corrupt politicians, all of which he sees as part of a broader effort to weaken and influence Brazil’s government and electoral process.
