Germany's oldest train runs fairytale tours for children

Germany's oldest train runs fairy-tale tours.

Trains are usually among children’s favorite toys, for they take them to the land of fairytales. In the German city of Dresden, there is the country’s oldest public train which in some days runs fairytale tours for children.

Dating back to 18-83, the Weisser Valley Railway is one of the oldest public narrow gauge railways still operational in Germany.

The steam trains carry locals and tourists between two small towns south of Dresden six times a day.

They go through the Weisser Valley, along the lakes and through forests with beautiful scenery. On some days, children can go on fairy-tale tours with a narrator telling them traditional German fairy-tales.

Half of the wagon is decorated with clothesline props and the windows are adorned with letters and stars.

The children listen to the stories, sing along and take part in enacting the story while the story-teller uses the beautiful landscape to take the children to lands of far, far away.

The steam locomotive chuffs as it reaches the platform. Parents and children both seem to have appreciated the experience.
