Media reports say the UK Foreign Secretary George Osborne has given one of his advisers a political promotion and a pay rise of more than 40 percent while asking public sector workers to accept a pay freeze.

The reports say Thea Rogers, a close associate of Osborne who is now his chief of staff has received the biggest pay increase among all the political special advisers across government.

According to The Guardian, Rogers is a former state-funded BBC producer. She is believed to have been responsible for Osborne’s Caesar-style haircut and for placing him on the 5:2 diet. A year ago, she acted as a special adviser, handling his image and events.

The revelation comes as official figures show that the special bill for governmental advisers rose to £9.2 m in 20-14-15, up from £8.4m the previous financial year.

Back in July, Osborne told thousands of teachers, nurses, police, firefighters and civil servants that they would face another round of austerity measures in the coming years and their pay rises would be limited to 1 percent a year.

“David Cameron can’t bury the fact that he’s broken a direct promise he made to reduce the cost of politics and curb the number of special advisers in government,” Labour’s Deputy Leader, Tom Watson, said.
