A helicopter has crashed in New Zealand, killing all the six passengers on board as well as the pilot in one of the country’s best-known tourist spots.
Authorities told local media that the helicopter went down on Saturday on Fox Glacier, a popular tourist destination on South Island, the larger of the two major islands that make up New Zealand.
The accident happened due to bad weather, according to a police statement.
A rescuer had been winched down to investigate the crash site halfway up the glacier, where he confirmed that there were no survivors.
Authorities have said recovering the bodies could take time because of the terrible weather. The names and nationalities of the pilot and six passengers have not been made available.
The downed helicopter was owned by Alpine Adventures, a company that runs helicopter scenery tours.
The glacier where the helicopter crashed is visited by thousands of tourists each year.
In 2010, nine people, including four foreign tourists, were killed when their plane crashed at Fox Glacier Airport near the location of the Saturday helicopter crash.
