‘Johnson, Osborne favorite Tory leadership contenders’

(L-R) Chancellor George Osborne, Mayor of London Boris Johnson

An opinion poll shows Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Chancellor George Osborne are the two favorite contenders for the next leader of Britain’s Conservative party.

According to the Ipsos-Mori survey, Johnson remains the most favorite among the general public whereas Osborne was the most popular among Conservative voters.

About 27% of those surveyed said they would prefer Johnson as the next Tory leader. Theresa May, the Home Secretary, secured 17% of the wider public support, ahead of Osborne who came third with 15%.

Prime Minister David Cameron declared he would not contest next leadership race.

Osborne was the most favorite among party faithful with 32% support. However, Johnson’s popularity among Conservatives was also seen high with 29% of them favoring him for the top post. May was on the third spot with 18% support.

The poll comes just two days a party conference in Manchester where the issue of future Tory leadership is expected to appear. The replacement for the top party position was initiated by Prime Minister David Cameron himself when he said that he would not run for the third term.

Education Secretary Nicky Morgan has already unveiled her plans for leadership contest after Cameron.

Poll: Four in 10 UKIP supporters favor London Mayor as next Tory leader

Last month, Osborne again came out ahead in a regular poll asking Conservative party members who they would like to be their next leader. However, differences of opinions both at the national level and the party itself shows it could pose a major problem when Cameron stands down before the 2020 general elections.

The Ipsos-Mori also found that about 40% supporters of the UK Independence Party say they would be most tempted to vote Conservative with the London Mayor in command.

It is Tory members who will pick Cameron’s replacement but if the support level continues with the same pace, the chances of Osborne seems bleak as he is just two points above Johnson and there’s still four years to go before the leadership vote.
