A woman's decapitated body and two mutilated dogs have been found by police inside an apartment in Phoenix, Arizona, according to reports.
Authorities believe a 43-year-old man responsible for the horrific crime also cut his left arm off and removed one of his own eyeballs.
The suspect reportedly admitted to killing "three family members," though it was unclear if he counted the dogs in that number, police spokesman sergeant Trent Crump said on Saturday.
The gruesome incident was discovered Saturday after a male neighbor knocked on the door of the apartment to check on the suspect, whom he hadn't seen for several days.
When the man answered the door, the neighbor could see that the apartment's floors and walls were covered in blood and immediately contacted the police.
When officers arrived, they detained the suspect, whose left arm was severed at the elbow and his left eyeball was missing.
Once in the apartment, police found the woman's decapitated body inside a closet. Two dead dogs were also discovered.
"It was an absolutely horrific scene," Crump told reporters. He said the suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was undergoing surgery.
The names of the suspect and victim were not immediately released.
