The spokesman of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi has stepped down following the release of a controversial video showing him singing in praise of the executed dictator Saddam Hussein.
Rafid Jaboori has apologized for the footage in a Facebook post, saying he made the video over 15 years ago to “meet the requirements of living at that time.”
Jaboori, a former BBC journalist, was named Abadi’s spokesman less than six months ago.
“I didn’t want to further embarrass the prime minister’s office... so I requested I be relieved and that was done,” Jaboori said.
Jaboori also denied allegations that he was a member of Saddam’s former Ba’ath party.
“I was young then and lacked wisdom, but even at that time, I was not a member of the Ba’ath party, and I am not a Ba’athist now,” he said.
The former Iraqi regime was toppled by the US-led coalition in 2003. Saddam Hussein was hanged three years later for crimes committed in a brutal crackdown during his reign.
