New Delhi is home to hundreds of thousands of homeless people who die every year without an identity. Surveys suggest about 10 people die on the streets of Delhi everyday; most of them are the young working people like balloon sellers, rickshaw pullers, casual workers, and street vendors. Experts say successive governments have failed to uplift this deprived section.

According to data from Zonal Integrated Police Network or the Zipnet around 800 unidentified bodies have been recovered in the capital so far this year. Sunil Kumar of Center for Holistic Development who runs an NGO for homeless people said most of these unidentified bodies were of homeless people. Homeless people living on roadsides are mostly vulnerable to accidents, theft and brutality. Extreme weather and exposure to pollution also make them sick.

Tehmeena a homeless woman has recently lost her husband who was suffering from cancer and lost the battle with the deadly disease. Now she is on her own along with her 6 kids and has nowhere to go. She says we are born to live and die on roads. Most of these homeless are unable to obtain access to basic necessities like food, water clothing, shelter and even healthcare reflecting the awful negligence of the administration.

Experts say there is an urgent need for collective effort by the government, NGOs, and the civil society to ensure that everyone gets his right to shelter and no one is left to live deprived of his very basic rights.
