Qatar uses Al-Jazeera in media war against Egypt: Journalist

Al-Jazeera English’s journalist Mohamed Fahmy speaks during an interview in Cairo, February 19, 2015.

Al-Jazeera English’s journalist Mohamed Fahmy has accused Qatar of using the Doha-funded broadcaster to “wage a media war” against Egypt.

Mohamed Fahmy, who was released on bail on February 12 after serving more than 400 days behind bars in a jail in Cairo, criticized Al-Jazeera for “negligence” in his case on Thursday.

Waiting retrial in Egypt, he said that the broadcaster is partially to blame for his ordeal in prison.

Fahmy and another journalist, Baher Mohamed, were arrested by Egyptian security forces in December 2013 along with their Australian colleague Peter Greste, who was released last week and deported to his home country.

The three were then put on trial for allegedly reporting in favor of Egypt’s blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood organization and the country’s first freely-elected President Mohamed Morsi, who was toppled in a coup led by former army chief and now President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi in July 2013.

Fahmy and Mohamed were both released on bail on February 12. The court, however, did not drop the charges leveled against the two.

“Although we’re out on bail, this is not even close to being over. We’re still facing very serious potential consequences,” Fahmy said. “The media and the public are our only line of defense.”

Cairo and Doha have been at odds over Qatar’s support for Morsi.
