A Banking giant. HSBC have come under fire after it emerged they helped millions of wealthy clients dodge tax.
And now the government is also being implicated in the scandal.
Britain’s chief tax inspector told MP’s in 2011 that his department had a disc from the Geneva branch of a major UK bank with 6000 names all ripe for investigation. Downing Street deny they had any knowledge of HSBC’s wrongdoing.
That is now being questioned since documents leaked at the time, showed that the major UK bank was HSBC.
The Tories and big business have always been close. And that’s why accusation are being thrown at David Cameron, on his decision to appoint former HSBC chairman, Stephen Green as trade minister after making him a peer 2010. During Prime Ministers Questions Mr. Cameron was asked whether he had spoken to Mr Green about what was happening at HSBC. Cameron replied he had followed every proper procedure.
As questions continue to be asked about HSBC’s conduct, the questions for the government are piling up too. Both need to be answered.
