After Saturday's unequivocal election, Italy's new President Sergio Mattarella was sworn in in the Lower House in Rome on Tuesday.
The 73-year-old former constitutional court judge vowed to be an impartial arbiter of Italian politics but also called on politicians to help him.
However, some politicians believe the new president's coming to power is a result of plots inside the government.
The election of Sergio Mattarella as President of Italy comes at a crucial moment for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s government. The 40-year old head of government is trying to implement an ambitious agenda of economic and institutional reforms aimed at pulling the country out of a triple-dip recession.
Renzi's government has sealed a deal with several parties including Berlusconi's Forza Italia with the goal to introduce a new and more equitable election law and to change Italy's costly political system.
Skeptics believe that Renzi's alliance with center-right parties- which they deemed as fragile - is destined to be a political failure.
