Zakariyah A Zainab is a Nigerian Muslim woman born into the scholarly Family of Zakariyah. Her Father's family have been Islamic erudite scholars from Sokoto state for hundreds of years. While her mother's family are from the Royal itantebo's family in Ijebu ode. Zainab's Father and grandfather's library provided her an enormous view into the outside world. Widening her vector on the world right from her childhood. The injustices around her, the wars across Africa, and the imperialistic influence of the western hegemonic powers on the African continent remains of particular interest to her. However these interests did not manifest to action until after an externally influenced massacre was carried out by the Nigerian Army (under the command of the former president Muhammad buhari) against Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria. The pogrom led to the death of thousands of innocent men, women and children. With hundreds still missing till date and hundreds others living with injuries ranging from bullet wounds to amputations and mutilation by the Nigerian army. This was the catalyst that began her years of activism. The mainstream media’s bias and misinformation campaign about Africa and Africans made her start looking into journalism as an extension of her activism. She believes that Journalists, when they do their jobs well, are the voice of the voiceless and the conscience of the people. She has worked with several independent media houses across Africa before joining PRESSTV first as a news editor, global affairs analyst and now the news anchor desk. She is an avid reader, a travel enthusiast and an eternal introvert who looks forward to a quiet time with a book, a cup of steaming coffee and the sounds of rain.
