Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman says the United States has violated the framework of the Islamabad agreement signed by the two countries, stressing that the Islamic Republic will firmly safeguard its national interests and sovereignty.

“From the very first step, the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US was structured not on the basis of trust, but rather on a clear ‘commitment-for-commitment’ mechanism; this was because there was no sign of goodwill in the other party's conduct,” Esmaeil Baghaei said in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday.

He noted that the US had violated Clause 5 of the memorandum of understanding (MoU), which emphasizes the Islamic Republic’s responsibility for ensuring the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, adding that Washington “has effectively violated the agreement’s framework through its unilateral actions and acts of aggression against Iran.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will firmly pursue the protection of its national interests and the exercise of its sovereignty,” Baghaei stressed.

Earlier in the day, the US military carried out a fresh round of illegal and unprovoked strikes on the country’s coastal areas.

The US launched military strikes on several coastal bases and civilian sites in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province and the city of Mahshahr, in an open violation of the ceasefire.

In response, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) struck 85 US military targets in Bahrain and Kuwait with missiles and drones in an initial response to the American aggression.

The IRGC said the strikes targeted facilities at Port Salman, home to the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait. It also announced the downing of an MQ-9 drone, saying the aircraft attempted to interfere with the operation before it was shot down.

The MoU between the two countries, brokered by Pakistan and announced in June, called for an immediate halt to military operations, negotiations towards a permanent settlement within 60 days, and temporary relief from certain US sanctions, including those affecting Iranian oil exports.

This is not the first time the United States has targeted Iranian territory since Tehran and Washington reached the MoU in June.

Iran’s Armed Forces have responded to each such incident with decisive retaliatory strikes against strategic and sensitive American targets across the region.
