The third round of fresh indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States has begun in Geneva with Omani mediation.
The talks were launched in the Swiss city on Wednesday, beginning with a meeting between Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Omani counterpart, Badr Al-Busaidi.
‘US has to avoid contradictory behavior’
During the meeting, Iran’s points and considerations regarding the nuclear issue and the lifting of the US’s illegal and unilateral sanctions against the country were explained.
Araghchi stated that the success of the negotiations depended on the seriousness of the other side and its refraining from contradictory behavior and positions.
He also expressed appreciation for the Omani top diplomat’s efforts to help advance the ongoing diplomatic process.
Oman hails Iran’s ‘steadfastness’
Al-Busaidi, for his part, praised the Islamic Republic’s steadfastness in pursuing a diplomatic approach to the nuclear issue, emphasizing Oman’s readiness to continue its good offices and provide any assistance along this path.
He expressed hope that, with mutual seriousness from the parties to the talks, the negotiations would lead to a result satisfactory to both sides.
The Iranian top diplomat had arrived in Geneva a few hours earlier.

Ahead of the meeting, he had reiterated that a “fair, balanced, and equitable deal” with the United States was attainable.
In an interview with the India Today magazine, he had said the two sides had made some progress in the previous round and reached certain understandings, adding, “We can build something in the form of an agreement” based on them.
Iran, he had added, was prepared to address any questions or ambiguities concerning its peaceful nuclear energy program as a means of disproving the US’s and its allies’ routine allegations against Tehran of “diverting” its nuclear activities towards “military purposes.”
The remarks came, although, US President Donald Trump has markedly escalated his regular warlike rhetoric concerning Iran, besides ordering significant military buildup in the West Asia region, including around the Islamic Republic.
The hostile posturing has seen Washington deploy two aircraft carriers as well as numerous warplanes and missile systems in the region.
Araghchi, however, had also asserted, “There is no military option for Iran’s peaceful nuclear program," stressing that the Islamic Republic’s Armed Forces were ready, and added that “the aim is to prevent a war.”
“When you are prepared for a war, you can prevent it.”
