The permanent mission of Iran to the United Nations has expressed its firm opposition to a draft resolution on the Ukraine crisis, citing concerns that it would not contribute to lasting peace in the region.
Ali Bahreini, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, reaffirmed Tehran’s consistent position on the crisis at the 23rd plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly’s 11th Extraordinary Special Session on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law, particularly the principles of the UN Charter.
He went on to say that since the beginning of the conflict, Iran has maintained that all UN member states must respect sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, and avoid the use or threat of force.
The Iranian envoy also highlighted Tehran's advocacy for addressing the root causes of the crisis, including actions by certain states and NATO that have provoked tensions, expressing regret that the current resolution did not adequately address these fundamental issues.
"This text was presented at an inopportune time and without transparent consultations," he said. "It not only fails to advance peace but may also deepen existing divisions."
Commenting on Iran's vote against the resolution, the Iranian envoy stressed Tehran's commitment to supporting efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict, while firmly rejecting baseless allegations about its involvement in supporting one side in the war.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran categorically rejects these accusations, which have been consistently denied," he said.
Additionally, the Iranian mission raised concerns about the true objectives behind the resolution, suggesting that it may be more about political exploitation within the broader geopolitical competition rather than fostering peace in Ukraine.
The UN General Assembly’s resolution, which calls for an immediate, complete, and unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, was sponsored by Western countries and received 107 votes in favor, 12 against, and 51 abstentions. Notably, the United States abstained from voting, while Russia voted against it.
The resolution reiterates the UN’s support for a "sustainable peace" in Ukraine on the fourth anniversary of the conflict.
Despite voting against the resolution, Iran reiterated its commitment to constructive engagement and dialogue as the only viable path to a sustainable peace in Ukraine.
