Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has slammed the administration of US President Donald Trump for “betraying” the West and NATO over its handling of the Ukraine war.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Clinton described the administration’s approach to Ukraine as “disgraceful.”
“He has betrayed the West, he’s betrayed human values, he’s betrayed the NATO charter, the Atlantic charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” Clinton said.
She further accused Trump of seeking unaccountable power. During the panel discussion, Petr Macinka, deputy prime minister of the Czech Republic, interjected, suggesting that Clinton simply does not like Trump. The former first lady responded candidly: “Not only do I not like him, but I don’t like him because of what he’s doing to the United States and the world. I think you should take a hard look at it if you believe something good will come of that.”
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz emphasized on Friday that “a divide has opened up between Europe and the United States… The United States’ claim to leadership has been challenged, and possibly lost.”
Tensions between Washington and Europe have also risen over Trump’s attempts to assert control over Greenland and advance his plans for the multibillion-dollar "Golden Dome" missile defense system, which he has said will be operational before the end of his term in 2029.
Trump argued that NATO allies must increase their commitment to Arctic security to counter what he described as growing threats from Russia and China.
