Iran-US indirect talks
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Tehran seeks a fair and honorable deal with Washington, as the two sides prepare for indirect talks on Iran’s nuclear program. The Iranian FM added that many core and preliminary issues are expected to be addressed in the upcoming meeting. He emphasized that the negotiations will be conducted indirectly and will focus exclusively on the nuclear file. Araghchi asserted that the Iranian team will seek a deal that safeguards the national interests. The top diplomat is leading a senior political delegation that includes Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei. Experts on nuclear policy and sanctions are also present. US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will represent the American side. The talks are mediated by Oman.
US-Israeli Gaza genocide
The Israeli military presses ahead with its aggression against Gaza, killing more Palestinian civilians in its latest round of strikes. At least two people were killed after Israeli warplanes bombed a residential building in the northern city of Beit Lahia. To the south, an Israeli air raid targeted a home in Khan Yunis and killed at least one Palestinian. Israeli strikes in Gaza city also left several Palestinians dead and injured. The latest figures bring the death toll in Gaza to more than 50,900. The UN has voiced concern about the dire humanitarian situation across Gaza amid the Israeli blockade of essential supplies to the coastal sliver. The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees says Israel is weaponizing humanitarian assistance. Branding Gaza as a post-apocalyptic killing zone, UNRWA has called for immediate action to prevent the humanitarian crisis from worsening.
US pro-Israeli stance
A recent ruling by a US immigration judge to deport pro-Palestine activist Mahmoud Khalil from the country has drawn strong condemnation from several lawmakers. A US immigration judge on Friday ruled that the deportation case against Khalil can move forward, one month after the Columbia University graduate student was detained for his involvement in pro-Palestine protests. Democratic Congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, wrote on X that Khalil’s continued detention is a clear violation of the First Amendment and jeopardizes freedom of speech. Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez also voiced support for him, pledging to stand with Khalil and urging all defenders of constitutional rights to do the same. Khalil’s legal team vowed to keep fighting for his release, calling the ruling weaponization of immigration law aimed at silencing dissent. He has been in custody since March 8, when immigration agents arrested him in front of his pregnant wife, who is a US citizen.
