Tensions over Taiwan
China's military has conducted a live-fire drill around Taiwan, a day after its large-scale naval and air exercises, aiming to warn Taiwan against pursuing independence. The exercise, codenamed ‘Strait Thunder’ was carried out in the middle and southern regions of the Taiwan Strait, an essential route for global shipping. The drills involved precision strikes on simulated targets such as key ports and energy facilities. Taipei has condemned China’s drills as a threat to peace and security in the region. Taiwan has scrambled its fighter jets as parts of its measures to monitor China’s actions. The military drills come amid rising tensions, as China reaffirms its claim over Taiwan with the self-governed island demanding sovereignty, relying on US support and military aid. But Beijing has vowed that as long as Taiwan independence provocation continues, anti-independence punishment will not stop.
