UN High Commissioner Volker Turk says the Israeli policy of expanding and consolidating settlements across the occupied West Bank amounts to “a war crime.”

"The transfer by Israel of parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies amounts to a war crime," Turk said in a statement on Tuesday.

The UN rights chief said Israel must evacuate all settlers from the occupied West Bank and make reparations for decades of illegal settlement.

"Israel must immediately and completely cease all settlement activities and evacuate all settlers, stop the forcible transfer of the Palestinian population, and prevent and punish attacks by its forces and settlers."

The UN rights chief urged the international community to take meaningful action against the occupying entity.

A recent report based on research between November 1, 2023 and October 31, 2024 said there had been a "significant" expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East al-Quds.

It has cited reports by Israeli non-governmental organizations of tens of thousands of planned housing units in new or existing settlements.

The findings will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council.

The UN has repeatedly said the alarming Israeli settlement expansion and legal changes in the occupied West Bank fly in the face of international law.

Around 700,000 Israeli settlers live in the occupied West Bank and East al-Quds.

Most United Nations member states consider settlements built in the West Bank and other territory Israel captured in 1967 to be illegal under international law.
