Rejecting Trump’s threats

Hamas says the US president’s threats will only encourage the Israeli regime to not abide by the ceasefire agreement. Following Donald Trump’s statement on captives, the resistance group’s spokesman, Hazem Qassem, said the Palestinian side has fully complied with the terms of the first phase of the agreement while Tel Aviv is avoiding to implement the second phase. He said the US needs to pressure the regime to begin negotiations for the next stage of the ceasefire. The reaction came after Donald Trump issued a stern warning, saying there will be ‘hell to pay’ if Hamas refuses to release all the remaining captives immediately. Trump also urged the group’s leadership to leave the territory, saying he is sending Israel everything it needs to ‘finish the job’.

Gaza humanitarian crisis

The United Nations Children’s Fund says the Israeli regime’s blockade of Gaza will have devastating consequences. The aid group said the siege is threatening lifesaving healthcare services for children, including newborns. It said the existing supplies have already been largely distributed throughout the enclave. UNICEF said the needs are so high that aid groups have not been able to stockpile goods during the 42-day truce. Other rights groups have also warned about the deteriorating situation. The World Food Programme says its Gaza food stockpile will last only two weeks. The Norwegian Refugee Council has also highlighted severe tent shortages, saying that infants are dying from cold. Israel has blocked the delivery of all aid to Gaza since Sunday.

US-South Korea drills

South Korea and the United States have conducted joint live-fire drills near the demilitarized zone. The military exercise involved over 160 military assets, including tanks and F-35A jets. During the training, South Korean fighter jets dropped more than 30 live munitions. It is aimed to showcase military readiness against North Korea. On Thursday, the two countries announced that they will start large annual joint military drills next week to enhance their readiness. The exercises will run from March 10 to 20. North Korea has time and again condemned the exercises, calling them a rehearsal for an invasion.
