The administration of US President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions against seven leaders of Yemen’s Ansarullah resistance movement.

The White House has already designated the group as a “foreign terrorist organization (FTO).”

The US Treasury Department said on Wednesday that the seven leaders “smuggled military-grade items and weapon systems into Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and also negotiated Houthi weapons procurements from Russia.”

“By seeking weapons from a growing array of international suppliers, Houthi leaders have shown their intent to continue their reckless and destabilizing actions in the Red Sea region,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

On Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Washington had re-designated the Yemeni resistance group an FTO.

Trump’s first Republican administration had similarly designated the Houthis in its waning days.

But former President Joe Biden’s administration revoked the designation in an attempt to facilitate the delivery of aid to Yemen, which was facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Rubio, however, said the humanitarian crisis was not an issue for Washington anymore.

The United Nations has anticipated that more than 19 million people across Yemen will need humanitarian assistance over the course of 2025.
