At least two people have been killed when Israeli military aircraft carried out an airstrike targeting a vehicle in the eastern part of Lebanon in a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement with the Arab country.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported that an Israeli drone struck a pickup truck on Thursday as it was traveling on the outskirts of the city of Hermel, killing two individuals and injuring several other people.

Arab media outlets, citing local sources, said that the target of the strike was a Hezbollah figure named Mahdi Shaheen.

Hours later, another Israeli aerial raid targeted a residential area in the village of Deir Qanoun al-Naher in southern Lebanon.

There were no immediate reports about possible casualties or the extent of damage caused.

The developments came a day after an Israeli drone strike hit a car on the Hosh al-Sayyed Ali-al-Qasr road in northern Hermel, killing two people.

Israeli reconnaissance aircraft flew over Hermel at low altitude following the attack.

The Israeli military said in a statement that the strike had targeted an “important” member of the Hezbollah resistance movement in Lebanon.

“A short time ago, the army carried out a precise, intelligence-based strike against an important Hezbollah figure from unit 4400 in the Qasr region of Lebanon,” the military said in a statement on Wednesday.

A few hours later, the Israeli army's Arabic-speaking spokesman, Avichay Adraee, claimed that the target of the strike was Maher Ali Nasreddine, a leader of the 4400 unit.

Israel was forced to accept a ceasefire with Hezbollah after experiencing substantial losses during almost 14 months of hostilities and not accomplishing its objectives in its offensive against Lebanon. The truce came into effect on November 27.

Since the start of the agreement, though, the occupation forces have been conducting near-daily attacks on Lebanon in violation of the ceasefire, including airstrikes across the Arab nation.

On January 27, Lebanon announced its agreement to extend the ceasefire with Israel until February 18.

However, Israel now maintains its occupation of five strategic locations in southern Lebanon, namely Labbouneh, Mount Blat, Owayda Hill, Aaziyyeh, and Hammamis Hill, near the border beyond the February 18 deadline.

Lebanon has rejected the continued presence of Israeli troops, a violation of the ceasefire and the withdrawal deadline. Senior authorities in Beirut say they will “adopt all means” to force the occupation forces out of the Arab country.
