Gaza ceasefire

As the first step of the Gaza ceasefire agreement that has come into effect, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has released 3 Israeli captives. In a statement, the Israeli army confirmed that the 3 Israeli captives have been handed over to the regime’s forces. The step is part of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas that has come into effect with the first stage of the three-stage deal planned to last 42 days. It will see the release of hundreds of Palestinians, abducted by Israel, in exchange for 33 Israeli captives. Israel had delayed the halt in bombing of Gaza under the pretext of Hamas having failed to publish the names of three Israeli captives to be released. Hamas said it remained committed to the deal as it came into effect. Meanwhile, the ceasefire agreement sparked celebrations in Gaza with jubilant people taking to the streets to celebrate.

People in the streets were distributing sweets to celebrate the ceasefire deal which took effect today. Meanwhile, members of the Hamas resistance movement, who have been fighting the Israeli military since October 2023, joined Gaza residents to celebrate the ceasefire. They said the resistance movement will continue to exist despite Israel’s onslaught on the strip. 

Israeli 'act of surrender'

ivisions deepening among Israeli officials over Gaza. Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has threatened to overthrow the cabinet if Israel does not occupy the strip. Smotrich, who is the head of the Religious Zionist Party, called for a military rule in Gaza. He said there’s no other way to defeat the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas. The extremist minister called the Gaza ceasefire agreement a “very serious mistake” and “surrender to Hamas.” Far-right minister Itamar Ben-Gvir also announced his party’s withdrawal from the ruling coalition after the Gaza ceasefire. He characterized the approval of the ceasefire as an act of surrender and a decisive triumph for the Palestinians.
