Iran summons German ambassador over interference by Berlin officials
Iran has summoned German Ambassador Markus Potzel over Berlin officials meddling in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic.
On Monday, the Iranian Judiciary ordered the execution of German-Iranian convicted terrorist Jamshid Sharmahd.
German officials protested to the execution, claiming that the Iranian Judiciary system lacked legal jurisdiction for the terrorism case involving the Iranian national, who held a German passport and lived in the United States.
On Tuesday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned Potzel to convey Tehran's strong protest.
Sharmahd was convicted last year and handed the death sentence for committing "corruption on earth” by planning and orchestrating anti-Iran terrorist acts.
He was behind a series of deadly attacks targeting religious sites in Iran which left a multitude of Iranians dead and injured, including women and children.
The Director General of the Western Europe Department at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed Potzel that the German stance in defending the ringleader of a terrorist organization, responsible for numerous bombings, contradicted Berlin's claims of supporting the rule of law, upholding human rights, combating injustice, and fighting terrorism.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry official said there is a "blatant contradiction" in the Germans' complicity in the Israeli atrocities against the Palestinian and Lebanese people, their unwavering support for the genocide in the Gaza Strip, and their claims with respect to human rights.
Likewise, Germany summoned the Iranian charge d'affairs in Berlin to protest the execution of Sharmahd. It also recalled its ambassador to Tehran while indicating that Germany retains the right to consider taking further actions, without elaborating what the measures might be.
In the meantime, Potzel said he would convey Tehran’s strong protest to Berlin.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is to bring Potzel back to Berlin for consultation on the matter.
Last year, after the Tehran court found Sharmahd guilty and sentenced him to death, Germany expelled two Iranian diplomats.
