Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has underlined the need for convergence among Muslims in the face of Israeli crimes, saying Tehran regards Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia, as its “brothers.”
Pezeshkian made the remarks on Thursday during a meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in the Qatari capital of Doha.
The Iranian president expressed his satisfaction with the developing trend of Iran-Saudi relations and stressed the Islamic Republic’s keenness to further expand its interactions with the kingdom.
“We consider Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia, to be our brothers and emphasize the need for them to put aside [their] differences, and to boost convergence and synergy with each other,” he said.
This is “because we believe what caused the promotion of Islam across the world was friendship and brotherhood among Muslims.”
Iran and Saudi Arabia resumed ties following a seven-year hiatus under a China-brokered deal in March 2023, which saw the two sides re-open diplomatic missions.
Also in his remarks, the Iranian chief executive described the bitter and unfortunate developments in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, which are caused by Israeli aggression, as one of the most important issues of the Muslim world.
He further referred to Iran’s recent retaliatory missile attack against the occupying entity’s military and intelligence bases, and reiterated that Tehran does not welcome any escalation of tensions in the region, and that the country’s anti-Israel operation was a “legitimate response” to the continuation of Israeli crimes after the false promise of a Gaza ceasefire in exchange for Tehran’s restraint.
Muslims, Pezeshkian said, should not be indifferent to the sufferings and displacement of their Palestinian and Lebanese brothers and sisters.
“If the Zionist regime has today dared commit crimes and genocide in Gaza, it is due to the Islamic countries’ rifts and indifference,” he added.
“If we do not unite in confronting the aggression, today it is [against] Gaza and Lebanon, and tomorrow it will be …[against] other Islamic cities and countries.”
The Iranian president also emphasized the important role of Saudi Arabia, as a leading Islamic country, in stopping Israeli atrocities through consultations with Western states.
Prince Faisal, for his part, emphasized Saudi Arabia's determination to enhance relations with the Islamic Republic and resolve issues between the two friendly and brotherly countries.
He also touched on to the current critical situation and Israel’s attempt to expand the war on Gaza and Lebanon to other parts of the region.
Riyadh remains confident about Iran’s wisdom and tact in controlling the situation and pursuing the path towards regional peace, the top Saudi diplomat said.
