Iran Leader endorses president-elect
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution has called on the new Iranian administration to engage with other countries, but rely on domestic capabilities. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei made the remarks after endorsing Masoud Pezeshkian as Iran’s 9th president. Ayatollah Khamenei said no international issue must hold up domestic work. The leader said the administration must give priority to ties with neighbors, countries that expand Iran’s diplomatic reach, including in Asia and Africa, and governments that have helped Iran against foreign pressure. Ayatollah Khamenei also called for attention to the economy and the livelihood of people as a key domestic priority. He said everyone must avoid division and schism and called on parliament and the judiciary to help the new administration fulfill its objectives.
US-Israeli genocide in Gaza
More Palestinians are falling victim to the US-Israeli genocide in Gaza as the regime in Tel Aviv goes on with its unrelenting air and artillery strikes on the besieged territory. At least one Palestinian was killed and several others wounded in an Israeli bombing of an industrial area southwest of Gaza City. In a separate airstrike in the southern town of Abasan, a child was killed after regime warplanes targeted a residential building. The Israeli military also targeted several areas elsewhere in the Strip, leaving an unknown number of Palestinians dead and injured. Famine is also taking its toll in Gaza with many Palestinians, mostly children, dying of severe hunger and malnutrition. The Israeli aggression on Gaza began last October. Since then, more than 39,300 people have been killed and over 90,000 others injured.
Venezuela presidential election
Venezuelans prepare to cast their votes in the presidential elections on Sunday. Venezuela’s current president Nicolás Maduro is seeking a third term in office. Maduro and his ruling party are facing electoral challenges, as the opposition parties have come together to support a single candidate. Edmundo González is representing the opposition coalition and has gained his own traction. Twenty-one million Venezuelans are eligible to take part in the Sunday election. The next president will stay in power for a six-year term beginning on January 10, 2025.
