Leftists lead in French legislative elections, no party wins absolute majority
Leftist party leader, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, called Sunday on French President Emmanuel Macron to step down or choose a new prime minister from the ranks of his New Popular Front coalition.
Surprise polling projections in France say the coalition of left-wing forces, which came together to try to keep the far right from power, has won the most parliamentary seats in runoff elections, but has fallen short of an outright majority.
“We are immensely relieved. You see, tonight, we are allowed something that we had started to doubt and that is to love our country," Mélenchon told a cheering crowd in Paris.
Mélenchon is the most prominent of the leftist leaders of the New Popular Front, which is projected to become the biggest bloc in parliament followed by Macron’s centrist alliance, with the far right in the third place.
No one has won a majority of parliamentary seats.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, a member of Macron's centrist party, said he will turn in his resignation.
The far right has drastically increased the number of seats it holds in parliament and fell short of expectations after a solid performance in the first round of voting last week.
France's snap elections have potential impact on the war in Ukraine, global diplomacy and Europe’s economic stability.
They’re almost certain to undercut Macron for the remaining three years of his presidency.
