Iran presidential runoff
Vote counting is underway in Iran after the runoff round of a snap presidential election that will determine the successor to late President Ebrahim Raeisi. The final results of the Friday polls will be announced on Saturday. Over 61 million Iranians at home and in over one hundred countries were eligible to vote. Last Friday’s election led to a runoff as none of the four candidates managed to obtain enough votes to become president. Masauod Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili were the two contenders who headed to the second round. The election was organized after the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raeisi in a helicopter crash in May.
US-Israeli genocide in Gaza
More death and destruction in the Gaza Strip as the Israeli onslaught grinds on across the besieged territory. The regime’s forces bombed a grocery store near the southern city of Khan Yunis. At least six people, including three children, were killed. Elsewhere in the south, four Palestinians lost their lives in an attack near Rafah. An Israeli artillery shell targeted the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza. The northwestern areas of Gaza were also targeted, including from the sea. Israeli troops also blew up residential buildings in the Shuja’iya and al-Zeitoun neighborhoods east of Gaza City. Since the beginning of the US-Israeli genocidal war, more than 38,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, and nearly 87,500 others injured.
Hezbollah Israel clashes
Lebanon’s resistance movement, Hezbollah, has conducted fresh operations targeting Israeli military positions. Hezbollah said it has launched a number of rockets, targeting a barracks in the settlement of Kiryat Shmona in northern occupied territories. The Lebanese resistance group also targeted a building used by Israeli soldiers in the occupied Shlomi settlement. Meanwhile, Israeli media sources said the regime’s forces fired shells on the outskirts of al-Fakhar and Kfar Shuba in southern Lebanon. Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire on an almost daily basis since Israel launched its genocidal war on Gaza.
