'A major partner': Iran congratulates Modi over victory in India elections
Iran's Interim President Mohammad Mokhber has extended his congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his victory in parliamentary elections.
In a message on Friday, Mokhber said India has turned into Iran's main partner under Modi's leadership.
The interim president expressed hope that the Iranian and Indian nations will further promote relations given both sides' determination.
Modi, for his part, hailed Mokhber's congratulatory message and said Tehran and New Delhi will continue to jointly work to expand bilateral relations and promote regional peace, security and prosperity.
The Indian prime minister on Tuesday declared victory in parliamentary elections; however, his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to secure a majority in key states, showing a significant drop in the political landscape that the party has been in control of for the last ten years.
The Hindu nationalist party of Modi agreed with allies to form a new government. Modi is likely to start his third consecutive term as PM.
The 15-member BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition has 293 seats in parliament, giving it control of the legislature.
