Hamas fundamental part of Gaza political landscape, says top official

A high-ranking member of Hamas political bureau says the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movement is an inseparable part of the Gaza political landscape.

Ghazi Hamad made the remarks in an interview with the Qatar-based Al Araby television network on Monday night in reaction to US President Joe Biden’s announcement on Friday that Israel had “offered a new three-phase roadmap” to end its nearly eight-month genocidal war against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The ceasefire proposal includes a three-phase plan, an exchange of Israeli captives for Palestinian prisoners, the evacuation of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the rebuilding of the devastated coastal territory.

The proposal excludes Hamas from remaining in power, something that the group has repeatedly rejected.

Hamad said the Gaza ceasefire proposal announced by the US president is open to doubt.

The senior Hamas official stressed that the occupying Tel Aviv regime intends to mislead other parties involved in the Gaza ceasefire negotiations in order to press ahead with its bloody onslaught against the besieged coastal territory.

“Hamas resistance movement will never leave the [Gaza] political landscape. Zionists and Americans are daydreaming about such an absurd notion,” Hamad pointed out.

He further noted that Palestinians will shape Gaza's future once the devastating war engulfing the region winds down.

“Even if the war on Gaza ends, the Zionist regime cannot create a reality other than the eventual Palestinian governance of the coastal sliver,” Hamad pointed out.

Egypt and Qatar have been mediating negotiations aimed at conclusion of a ceasefire agreement following one in late November 2023, during which Hamas released 105 of the captives that had seized during Operation Al-Aqsa Storm.

Israel and Hamas failed to reach another ceasefire agreement after talks in Cairo last month.

Israel waged the atrocious onslaught against the Gaza Strip, targeting hospitals, residences, and houses of worship after Palestinian resistance movements launched a surprise attack, dubbed Operation al-Aqsa Storm, against the usurping regime on October 7.

At least 36,479 Palestinians have been killed, most of them women and children, and another 82,777 individuals have sustained injuries. More than 1.7 million people have been internally displaced during the war as well.
