Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad says that the conflict in Palestine has turned into a major concern for Damascus as he insists that Syria will continue to support Palestine's right to an independent state with holy al-Quds as its capital.
Mekdad said on Sunday that Syria’s position to support Palestinian people and their just cause has never changed since 1948 when a group of Zionists established the regime of Israel within the territories of Palestine.
He said that Syria’s support for Palestine has caused problems for the Arab country in its relations with the US and certain European countries.
The minister said Syria has also maintained a clear position on the need to liberate the occupied Golan Heights, a region in southwest Syria that has been controlled by Israeli forces since 1967, adding that Damascus also supports efforts to liberate areas in southern Lebanon from Israeli occupation.
Mekdad also expressed hope that Arab countries will adopt a united stance in dealing with sanctions imposed on Syria by Western countries.
He made the remarks on the sidelines of a meeting of foreign ministers of Arab countries in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The comments came amid an ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza where more than 31,000 people have been killed since early October when the regime launched its onslaught on Palestinians in response to an anti-Israeli operation by the Gaza-based resistance movement Hamas.
Syria has been a leading voice in calling for an end to US support for the Israeli regime’s brutal war on Gaza.
Damascus has also witnessed an increase in resistance activities against US forces stationed in parts of Syria as part of a pro-Palestine regional campaign against occupation forces in the region.
