China: US, UK attack on Yemen will definitely exacerbate regional tensions

China's Ambassador to the United Nations, Zhang Jun

China's envoy to the United Nations warns about the pending regional consequences of the United States and Britain's recent military attack against Yemen.

Zhang Jun made the remarks at a UN Security Council meeting on Friday, a day after the Western allies attacked the Arab Peninsula nation with warplanes and Tomahawk missiles. The attack came in response to Yemen's strikes in support of the Gaza Strip that has come under a genocidal and Washington-backed Israeli war.

"The military action launched by the US and the UK against Yemen will undoubtedly exacerbate regional tensions," Zhang said.

"We call on all parties to effectively abide by the UN Charter and international law. And to make joint efforts to maintain peace and security in the Red Sea and the Middle East," he added.

The Chinese official also took aim at the Israeli regime's hypocritical accusations against the UN of not being able to provide humanitarian assistance for Gaza amid the incessant Israeli war.

"It is Israel that has continued its indiscriminate bombardment against Gaza, and has placed numerous obstacles blocking access to humanitarian supplies. But it is also Israel that has accused the United Nations of not having the ability to provide humanitarian assistance. This is totally unacceptable," Zhang pointed out.

Also addressing the meeting, Palestine's UN ambassador Riyad Mansour called for immediate cessation of the Israeli war.

"If you want to send humanitarian assistance up to scale, if you want to prevent the forced displacement, if you want an army of humanitarian officers from the United Nations to be able to deliver humanitarian assistance to every corner in the Gaza Strip, you cannot do it without a ceasefire," Mansour said.

More than 23,500 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have died so far during the military campaign that the Israeli regime began on October 7 following an operation staged by Gaza's resistance movements.
