Iran's president has hailed the recent condemnation of the Israeli regime’s crimes against Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip by the United Nations General Assembly, describing it as an important achievement.
“The positive vote of [most member] countries for the UN General Assembly’s resolution in condemnation of the Zionist regime’s crimes [against Palestinians in Gaza] despite all the threats and promises posed by the [global] arrogant system was an important achievement,” Ebrahim Raeisi said while addressing a Cabinet session on Sunday.
On Friday, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling for the implementation of an immediate "humanitarian truce" in the Gaza Strip, which has been under a relentless and devastating war by the Israeli regime for the past three weeks.
The assembly voted in favor of the resolution that had been drafted by Arab states, with 120 votes in favor, while 45 abstained and 14, including Israel and the United States, voted no.
It adopted "calls for an immediate, durable, and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities."
The vote at the General Assembly came after the United Nations Security Council failed four times in the past two weeks to take action due to the United States' recurrently casting its veto against relevant resolutions.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Raeisi stressed that all Muslims and free people of the world support the oppressed people of Palestine.
“Holding a summit meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation is another step toward stopping the Zionist regime’s crimes, which must continue until a final result is obtained,” Iran's president said.
He noted that although Israel’s war machine -- under political, media and security management of the United States -- is struggling to reclaim the regime’s lost prestige, Palestinian fighters and the resistance front are having the upper hand on the battlefield.
“The recent move by the Zionist regime to infiltrate Gaza has so far failed and inflicted heavy casualties [on Israeli forces], and according to the resistance leaders’ assessment, if the move continues, Gaza will undoubtedly turn into a quagmire for the Zionist forces,” the Iranian president said.
He added that by repelling Israel’s ground attack on Gaza, Palestinian fighters “created a great epic,” which inflicted a second defeat on the Zionist regime during the past few weeks, which was even bigger than its first defeat in the face of Operation al-Aqsa Storm.
“This blow was so staggering that some American analysts have described it as security and political collapse of this regime,” Raeisi said.
The Israeli regime has been waging a brutal war against Gaza since October 7, when Hamas and its fellow Gaza-based resistance movement, the Islamic Jihad, launched their biggest operation against the occupying entity in years. The surprise Palestinian offensive, dubbed Operation al-Aqsa Storm, came in response to the regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.
The death toll in Gaza since the start of Israeli aggression has exceeded 8,000, 70 percent of which includes women and children.
