Iranian javelin thrower breaks world record at Para Athletics World Championships

Iran's para-athlete Saeid Afrooz has broken a world record and snatched a gold medal at the 2023 Para Athletics World Championships in Paris. 

Afrooz, who was competing in the final of men's F34 class javelin throw on Friday, set a record of 40.27 meters.

The javelin throw category saw two Colombians on the podium, namely Mauricio Valencia with 38.01 meters for the silver and Diego Meneses with 37.84 meters for the bronze.

Afrooz's medal is the third gold for the Iranian team attending the tournament, with Rashid Masjedi and Mehdi Olad being other Iranian gold medalists at the games.

Afrooz also secured a slot for Iran for the 2024 Paris Paralympics, bringing to nine the number of Iranian para-athletes who have won tickets to the major event. 

The 2023 Para Athletics World Championships began in Paris on Saturday. Over 1,300 competitors from 107 countries take part in 171 events over 10 days of competition.
