Beating US sanctions
A report says Iran is shipping the most crude in almost five years despite US sanctions. Bloomberg cited energy analysts as saying that Iran’s oil exports have surged to the highest level since the US unilaterally re-imposed sanctions on the country in 2018. A large chunk of Iran’s crude oil goes to China as the world’s major importer of energy. Several European customers including Germany, Spain, and Bulgaria also imported oil from Iran. The crude shipments have doubled since last autumn to reach 1.6 million barrels a day in May.

Russia-Ukraine war
The Russian president says Ukrainian troops have failed to make progress in their counteroffensive in the southeast. Putin said Ukrainian troops are using the so-called strategic reserves and have so far sustained heavy losses in personnel. Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia had launched the largest missile attack on Kiev in weeks. They said Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted 12 Russian missiles and a drone over the capital. The latest developments come as a delegation of African leaders seeking to broker a peace deal between the warring parties arrived in Kiev. The Kremlin says it’s open to peace talks but sees no willingness to negotiate on the part of Kiev. Ukraine says all Russian forces must leave its territory before any peace talks.
