Iran National Army Day

The Russian president met with top military commanders in the eastern Ukrainian region during his first visit since the war began between the two neighbors. The Kremlin says Vladimir Putin was briefed by the commanders on the situation in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, both of which Moscow has proclaimed part of Russia. Putin told the military commanders about the importance of exchanging views on the developments in the areas. Kherson and Luhansk along with two other eastern regions were formally annexed by Russia after referendums last September. However, Russia has lost some areas following counterattacks launched by Ukrainian forces.

Sudan conflict

Sudan's paramilitary known as the Rapid Support Force says it is engaged in a battle with the army to restore the rights of the people. In a statement, the RSF added that the new revolution is aimed at establishing a civil government through a democratic transition. This comes as fighting between the paramilitary forces and the army led by rival generals continues in the capital, Khartoum. The UN special representative for Sudan says over 180 people have been killed and another 1,800 injured since the fighting broke out on Saturday. The fighting follows weeks of tensions between the Army and the RSF over the planned integration of the paramilitary group into the regular army. Meanwhile, Washington said a US diplomatic convoy came under attack in Sudan on Monday.

US-Taiwan's arms sales

Taiwan is planning to buy hundreds of US anti-ship missiles aimed at countering China, as tensions between Beijing and the self-ruled island remain high. According to US media reports, as many as 400 US land-launched Harpoon missiles will be sent to Taipei. The US Navy earlier awarded Boeing a contract worth 1.17 billion dollars to produce and deliver the missiles. The Pentagon has said the production of the weaponry is expected to be completed by March 2029. It has also said Washington will supply defense equipment to Taipei to help it maintain a sufficient self-defense capability. The planned supply of the missiles to Taiwan is part of a deal approved by the US Congress in 2020. China has strongly opposed the new sales.
