Iran, Saudi FMs agree to meet 'in coming days'
Foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed to meet within the next few days as the two countries are moving quickly to build on their recent rapprochement.
In a phone conversation with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on Sunday, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian expressed satisfaction with the positive trend in bilateral relations and underlined Tehran's determination to promote its neighborliness policy.
The Saudi foreign minister, for his part, also hailed the positive current direction of bilateral ties and stressed the need for regular meetings and contact between the two country’s officials.
After several days of intensive negotiations hosted by China, Iran and Saudi Arabia finally clinched a deal on March 10 to restore diplomatic relations and re-open embassies and missions within two months after seven years of estrangement.
According to a joint statement, Iran and Saudi Arabia underscored the need to respect each other’s national sovereignty and refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of one another.
Iran, Saudi Arabia and China also expressed their firm determination to make their utmost efforts to promote regional and international peace and security.
The Iranian and Saudi Arabian foreign ministers also held a telephone conversation on March 23, discussing the ongoing normalization of relations between the countries, which were kick-started under the Chinese-brokered deal.
