UN mission calls on Taliban to reopen schools, universities for girls

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has voiced concern over the fate of female Afghan students, deprived of education by the Taliban. It says while schools and universities open their doors for a new academic year in a month, millions of women and girls have to stay home.

The UN mission has described the ban as “a human rights violation and massive act of self-harm.” UNAMA urged the Taliban government to act immediately to protect lives, livelihoods, and the future of Afghan people.

Afghan women rights activists are also warning about the consequences of the Taliban’s move.

The Taliban administration barred female students from most high schools last March, and from universities in December. Later, they also banned Afghan women from working for NGOs, and enrolling for university entrance exams.

Following the UN appeal for the reopening of schools and universities, millions of Afghan girls are now awaiting the final decision. That will be made by the Taliban rulers who have in the past taken a tough stance over the issue.
