Deadly Turkey, Syria earthquake
A major earthquake has rocked southeastern Turkey, wreaking havoc across the country and causing large-scale damage in neighboring Syria. Officials in Turkey have so far confirmed 284 deaths and over 2,000 injuries. South across the border, the 7.8 magnitude quake also killed over 240 people and injured hundreds of others. Turkish Disaster Agency has called for international support as search and rescue operations are underway to save those stuck under the rubble of fallen buildings. The death toll is likely to rise substantially in the coming hours as the earthquake hit when many people were asleep. The United States Geological Survey says the epicenter was the Turkish city of Gaziantep. But tremors were felt as far away as in Egypt, Romania and Georgia.
Israel West Bank violence
Israeli forces have killed 7 members of the Hamas resistance movement in a raid on a refugee camp in the city of Jericho in the occupied West Bank. Regime forces arrested a Hamas commander during the incursion and took away the bodies of the dead. The refugee camp was under military siege for the past 9 days. The Israeli military conducted several raids, claiming they were after alleged perpetrators of a shooting at a restaurant. This triggered clashes with Palestinians, who shot down an Israeli drone on Monday. Hamas and the Islamic Jihad resistance movements have condemned the raids. They say such atrocities will not frighten Palestinians and force them to abandon their cause. The Israeli military has killed at least 43 Palestinians during raids in the occupied West Bank this year so far.
UK healthcare strikes
Tens of thousands of nurses and ambulance workers in the UK walk out in the largest-ever strike by health workers in the country. Health providers have been staging separate industrial actions over the past months in a pay dispute. But the Monday stoppage is unseen in the 75-year history of the National Health Service in terms of scale. Workers from across sectors including healthcare, railway and education staff have been staging mass walkouts since last summer. They are demanding an increase in their wages in line with the double-digit inflation. But the government insists that pay rises are unaffordable and cause more price hikes. The UK and other European countries have seen an economic crunch amid rampant inflation due to the war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russia.
