The decision to send German and American tanks to Ukraine is continuing to generate controversy. Many believe the move will prolong the war and there's concern as to how Russia might respond. However, at a parliamentary hearing on Tuesday, EU legislators were told the West should go even further.

There are a lot of EU lawmakers who agree. Some argue constantly supplying lethal weapons to Ukraine is foolish.

European Union taxpayers have provided €50bn to Kiev since last March. A number of legislators would like to see less division within the EU.

Spanish MEP Javier Nart told his colleagues it's "ridiculous" to suggest Ukraine can win the war against Russia.

For now, the US and Germany have ruled out providing fighter jets to Ukraine. Others, including France, have not. According to many analysts, the risk that the conflict could escalate further, and spiral completely out of control, has never been greater.
