North Korea military goals
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has unveiled new goals for the country's military for 2023 at a meeting of the ruling Workers' Party. Kim reviewed the newly created challenging situation on the Korean peninsula and the border political landscapes. The North Korean leader set the direction for what he called anti-enemy struggle and goals for reinforcing defense power. Kim specified the principles of foreign affairs to protect sovereign rights and defend national interests. Tensions have remained high on the Korean peninsula this year. That’s because of North Korea’s repeated missile launches, as well as joint military drills by the neighboring south and the US. Pyongyang sees the drills as a rehearsal for an invasion. The other side is opposed to the North’s missile tests.
Ukraine War
The Ukrainian military has reported fresh Russian rocket attacks in the country’s east as the fighting between the two neighbors continues unabated. According to the military, Russian forces have fired 33 rockets at civilian targets in the city of Kherson since Tuesday. Fierce fighting is also ongoing around the city of Bakh-mut in Donetsk and Sva-tove in Luhansk. Russia has repeatedly denied the allegations of targeting civilians. Russia pulled its troops out of Kherson last month. That was seen as the Ukraine’s most significant gain in the 11-month-long war but Russia has recently intensified attacks on its critical infrastructures. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky calls the situation along the eastern front-line difficult and painful. He says Bakh-mut and other areas in the Donbas region require maximum military strength and concentration.
