Lebanon 2022: The year of gas production promises and political stalemate

Lebanon’s economic meltdown is about to enter its fourth year with additional afflictions in its trail. Although the country could finally hold the much awaited parliamentary elections, it entered the trap of a presidential election stalemate.

The year 2022 was not all towards a downfall for Lebanon; the year marked the finalization of a maritime border deal signed by Lebanon and Israel After more than a decade of on-off indirect talks.

Hezbollah’s Secretary General stressed in a brief statement that the deal is a victory for Lebanon’s government, people, and resistance. He also declared the end of Hezbollah’s exceptional mobilization over the maritime dispute, saying the resistance movement had accomplished its mission regarding the issue.

Analysts believe Hezbollah made the right calculations in this move. The deal is also seen as one of the major achievements of former president Michel Aoun who stepped down in November without a successor.

Now while Lebanese lawmakers have so far failed to elect a new president, a caretaker cabinet remains in place since the parliamentary vote last spring showed no sign of efforts to implement economic reforms.

As Lebanon ends the year 2022 without a president, observers are skeptical that any achievement concerning this file can be achieved soon. However, many believe prospects for gas production and export are promising in the New Year.
