Former US president Donald Trump has called for a Republican "giant red wave" to defeat Democrats in next week's midterm elections.

"If you want to stop the destruction of our country and save the 'American Dream,' then this Tuesday you must vote Republican in a giant red wave," he told a rally on Saturday in the crucial state of Pennsylvania, referring to the party's traditional color.

This comes just three days before midterm elections that will decide control of the House and Senate, along with crucial governor races across the country, which will shape the rest of Joe Biden’s term.

Republicans contend that Democrats have also engaged in political violence. They have condemned Democrats for failing to keep their focus on inflation and crime, two of voters' principal concerns, according to most opinion polls.

Biden has vowed to keep working to bring down inflation following a jobs report that showed a higher unemployment rate.

“Let me be clear. We’re going to do what it takes to bring inflation down. But as long as I’m president, I’m not going to accept an argument that the problem is that too many Americans are finding good jobs. Or that too many working Americans finally have more dignity in the workplace. Or that our largest, most profitable corporations shouldn’t have to pay their fair share,” Biden said in a statement on Friday.

A report published last month on inflation showed prices in the US are rising more than expected.

The report marks potential bad news for Biden and Democrats who are desperate to retain control of Congress and must try to convince voters deeply concerned about high prices that they can help drive inflation down.

Biden said in his statement on Friday that inflation is the top economic challenge and that he has a plan to bring down prices by lowering healthcare costs and energy costs.

Trump and his allies have pushed claims about the 2020 election, with many GOP-led states passing laws to address the large claims of voting fraud.

Trump and his allies had raised concerns that widespread fraud marred the election and that it was rigged by the Washington establishment in favor of Biden, who was certified as the winner in Congress on January 6, 2021.

Biden has warned the Republican Party in next week's midterm elections could set the nation on "the path to chaos".

Biden called on Americans to unite in opposition to "political violence" in Tuesday's midterm elections, which will determine control of both chambers of Congress and key state governorships.
