A refugee camp somewhere in the Luhansk region of Donbass. The civilians here are generally Russian speakers who fled recent Ukrainian advances not far to the West.
This woman, sobbing into her hands, tells me she has family in Ukrainian territory. So she doesn’t want to be on camera in fear of her family being accused of being pro Russian. They could be killed for that.
They also tell me they are scared to be on on Telegram channels like this, called, “collaborators of Luhansk.” It posts the photos and details of anyone working with the Russians, including teachers and nurses.
Along the battlelines, pro Ukrainians flee west. And pro Russians flee east. The ethnic boundaries of this once mixed country are being defined more clearly.
While Russia and NATO continue to pursue their objectives on the battlefield, there is increasingly, a peace to be made and new borders drawn, if the views of the people living here, were listened to.
