40 acres and a mule! That's right, 40 acres and a mule. After 246 years of slavery, that is what African Americans who had been enslaved were promised by the United States government.
That was back in 1865 and although that was no real compensation for two and a half centuries of slavery, even that promise was not kept towards Black Americans. It became symbolic of all the promises, laws, programs that were supposed to bring about more economic parity with whites for Black Americans, but never took place.
