Brazil: Lula's humble roots

Growing up in poverty is among the many things distinguishing presidential candidate Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva from his opponents. The difficulties he and his family faced from a young age undoubtedly influenced his policymaking during his government.
The former president's cousin took us to visit the small clay house Lula lived in until he was seven, located in the rural area outside of Garanhuns, in the northeastern state of Pernambuco.
Conditions in this part of the countryside were difficult. There was no running water and it was only in 2006 when Lula became president that rainwater collection systems were built in this and many other communities.
Despite the Workers' Party's advances on economic rights, poverty alleviation, eradicating hunger and in bridging inequality generally, conditions are now eteriorating under the neoliberal government of Jair Bolsonaro.It’s candidate Lula da Silva who many working class Brazilians say they identify with most.
