Former US President Donald Trump slammed Republican Senate Minority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell, accusing the senator of being a “pawn for the Democrats.”
Trump, who has previously denounced McConnell for failing to prevent what he has called the theft of the 2020 election, on Wednesday called on Republicans to boot him from his post as Senate minority leader.
Trump cited a report from The Federalist about McConnell and his wife Elaine Chao’s alleged ties to China in calling for his ouster from his longtime leadership post.
“Mitch McConnell is not an Opposition Leader, he is a pawn for the Democrats to get whatever they want,” Trump said in his statement. “He is afraid of them, and will not do what has to be done. A new Republican Leader in the Senate should be picked immediately!”
Trump has feuded with McConnell since the Senate leader denounced the former president in Congress for his alleged role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
Trump has frequently attacked McConnell for acknowledging Biden as the legitimate winner of the disputed 2020 election.
McConnell was called an “Old Crow” by Trump. Trump said former Vice President Mike Pence should not have “an automatic conveyor belt for the Old Crow Mitch McConnell to get Biden elected President as quickly as possible,” when there were “obvious signs of voter fraud or irregularities.”
Trump and his allies had raised concerns that widespread fraud marred the election and that it was rigged by the Washington establishment in favor of Biden, who was certified as the winner in Congress on January 6, 2021.
Trump has been casting doubt on the outcome of his loss by insisting it was the result of fraud. He has said that the 2020 presidential election was “the greatest Election Hoax in history.”
McConnell distanced himself from Trump since the former president was accused by the Washington establishment and media of inciting his supporters to invade the Capitol in the wake of his loss in the disputed 2020 presidential election.
McConnell had said that Trump is "morally responsible" for provoking the January 6 storming of the Capitol to overturn the election results.
Over the weekend, Trump slammed McConnell for making remarks last week about “candidate quality,” in a reference to Republicans running for Senate. McConnell has said the race for Senate control in November will be close.
Last year, Trump called for Republicans to elect a new Senate leader to boost the party’s chances of recapturing Congress in 2022.
“I think we’re going to do very well,” Trump said at the time. “We need good leadership. Mitch McConnell has not done a great job — I think they should change Mitch McConnell.”
In Wednesday’s statement, Trump accused McConnell of giving the “Radical Left the Trillions and Trillions of Dollars that they constantly DEMAND” and denounced him for failing to stop the passage of Biden’s landmark tax, climate and healthcare law known as the Inflation Reduction Act.
