Scotland moving toward new independence vote

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has earmarked 19th October, 2023 as a potential date for a second referendum on Scottish independence.

Scots were promised a ‘once in a generation opportunity’ to vote for independence in 2014 where the Yes movement narrowly missed out by 55.3% to 44.7%. Recent polls put the matter much more equally balanced with an almost 50-50 split.

Boris Johnson will not want to go down in history as the Conservative leader who spearheaded the breakup of the union, so Westminster will be doing all that it can to keep Scotland within the fold but with such stark differences emerging between the devolved administration and London, the task of keeping the union intact is becoming more difficult than ever.

The response from London has been a familiar one simply saying ‘not the right time’ for a vote but some ministers have been less diplomatic.

Recent political events across the union have presented a growing headache for the conservatives with Unionists across the region losing ground. Aside from the legal battles ahead, the SNP also has to win the domestic argument.

With a tough road ahead, the SNP say the Scottish people should have the right to determine their own futures, a move London will attempt to thwart at every stage.
