Lebanese security forces thwart terrorist attacks

In what seems to be a hefty catch, the Lebanese Internal Security Forces have thwarted a plan by Daesh terrorists to carry out three suicide bombings targeting religious compounds in Beirut's southern suburbs.

Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi told reporters that had this terrorist plot not been stopped, it would have taken Lebanon to a very dangerous situation.

Lebanon's Internal Security Forces said the instructions for the bomb plot came from a Daesh operative based in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh, who is in touch with extremists in Syria.

The terrorist operative was given three explosive vests and other weapons to prepare for simultaneous attacks on three religious compounds in the heart of the Beirut southern suburbs. This is reminiscent of the wave of attacks in the Beirut suburbs between 2013 and 2014.

The instructions were passed to an undercover ISF agent who had successfully managed to infiltrate Daesh networks in Lebanon.

Observers see that Daesh has lost initiative in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq and is trying to gain ground.

Daesh is seemingly taking advantage of a deep financial crisis in Lebanon to attract recruits, promising them high salaries.

Mawlawi uncovered the ministry and the security apparatus are monitoring the movement of Lebanese leaving the northern city of Tripoli to join the terrorist group and have opened talks with Iraqi authorities on this threat.
